What makes me even more uneasy are the translations of Calcufta figures of speech, done tactlessly and literally – this bothers me a little in The Hungry Tideand it bothers me a lot more with this book, appearing as it does amidst already leaden prose – chatar matha may fit seamlessly into Bengali; “umbrella head” sounds horrible and meaningless in English, and you’d think any author with an ear for dialogue would notice.

I would recommend it only to hard core scifi and medical thriller buffs I was taught about malaria in my premed and med, but not much in detail regarding the history of discovery of malaria. If it is, ‘scifi’s are extremely weird. The reader is forced to keep thinking about it much after turning the last page. Despite the hiccups, this is certainly a commendable and welcome attempt by Amitav Ghosh.
Some nice touches of alternate historical fiction, but ultimately too easy to put down. But I am more confused than ever. The man is clearly a human encyclopaedia. View all 5 comments. I am confused about the ending, not sure what it was and that it’s believable. The Calcutta Chromosome is a multi-layered novel, presenting different storylines from different times. I had gbosh idea what the book was about when I started reading it, which turned out to be a good thing because I was pleasantly surprised with what the book offered. When Ant recovers Murugan’s ID card again, he gets curios. There are a lot of characters and the story moves back and forth and sometimes there is a story within a story and another within it and it got confusing for me. If Peter Weir’s movie The Last Wave aka Black Rain were set in India and involved the study of malaria, and you threw in a little Stanislaw Lem, and you stuck it all into a set of Russian nesting dolls, you might end up with something like The Calcutta Chromosome.

It’s sort of a scientific thriller, but then again, is it? The setting of spiritual group, the e The Calcutta Chromosome started well with successive occurrences, which kept me glued to the pages, and then the mishap happened! That’s a point in favour of Mr. And it did not feel too much justified to bj the journeys I undertook with the characters.
This novel falls short in the way calcuttta ends: Murugan was obsessed with Ronald Ross, who had received the Nobel Prize in for his work on malaria. Finished the book, but am much confused regarding the story. Quite unusual like his other books I read far.
