What makes me even more uneasy are the translations of Calcufta figures of speech, done tactlessly and literally – this bothers me a little in The Hungry Tideand it bothers me a lot more with this book, appearing as it does amidst already leaden prose – chatar matha may fit seamlessly into Bengali; “umbrella head” sounds horrible and meaningless in English, and you’d think any author with an ear for dialogue would notice.

I would recommend it only to hard core scifi and medical thriller buffs I was taught about malaria in my premed and med, but not much in detail regarding the history of discovery of malaria. If it is, ‘scifi’s are extremely weird. The reader is forced to keep thinking about it much after turning the last page. Despite the hiccups, this is certainly a commendable and welcome attempt by Amitav Ghosh.
