    Description

This was my dad's when he was a boy, and he was born in 1919.  It was in my grandmother's things at her passing.  We are downsizing and parting with some treasures.  I've never seen it work, but I "assume" it did and still will.  Nonetheless, selling AS IS.  We put the track together and set the engine and cars on the track.  My husband turned on the transformer switch but the engine did NOT take off.  We may have not had the track together secure enough or the transformer connected properly.  We have never put together a train set, especially one 90 years old.  Track layout is approx 7'5" x 4'10", and we had a piece of straight track left over:  All dimensions are approximate.
(My original listing didn't have pictures of transformer snap to signal tower and track or track clips because I found them after the listing.  I didn't know what they were either.)  Here's what AN EXPERT WROTE to me:  From what I can tell without further inspection, one of the track pieces snaps on the track that you then connect to the transformer.  The other track piece goes to the signal tower.  The track clips go inbetween the sections of track to hold them together, particularly helpful if setting up on a hardwood floor or tile, and also helps with keeping the shape of the track.  When connecting the transformer to the track, you have to have one wire going to the center rail and this wire must be isolated to the center rail only, and you have to have the other wire connect to one of the outer rails.  It doesn't matter which one as long as it doesn't touch the center rail.  On the transformer, one of the posts may be labeled "U", and that is the one that goes to the outer rails and the other goes to the center rail.  If they are color coded, red goes to the center and black goes to one of the outside rails.
Of course when we set the track and train up, we knew none of that !  So no wonder the train didn't move.  Perhaps we will attempt this again in the future.  Or I'm thinking just leave to the train EXPERTS, which would hopefully be the new owner.  In the meantime, we moved and the train is again packed away.
AN EXPERT WRITES:  The engine and passenger cars are a set #34 with the lionel super motor in the engine.  It was manufactured in 1923-1924.
The 517 caboose was made 1927-1934 and did not go with the engine you have.  There may have been a new set at one time.  The 113 cattle car was made 1917-1924 and generally didn't come with the 33 engine as part of a set but may have been an individual sale.  It usually came with the 38 engine and with the later 318 engine in 1925-1926.
